This wild perennial herb grows abundantly in waste places of tropical and temperate regions, attaining a height of 30–90 cm. It possesses a branched tap root and an aerial, erect, angular, hairy stem with distinct nodes and internodes, showing violet or pink coloration at the nodes. The leaves are petiolate, opposite, simple, hairy, obovate, with reticulate venation. The inflorescence is a spike bearing reflexed flowers arranged on a long peduncle. The flowers are small, green, bracteate, bracteolate, and spinescent. The seeds are endospermic
