Vagbhata considered Guduchi as the prime drug for Vatarakta. In Dhanvantari Nighantu Padma Guduchi or Kanda Guduchi is described as a variety of Guduchi. Therapeutic usage of Guduchisattwa is mentioned in Rajanighantu, Yogaratnakara and Vaidyachintamani in the management of Jwara and Daha. Charaka enumerated Guduchi under Medhyarasayanas along with Mandookaparni, Yashtimadhu and Shankhapushpi. Bhavamishra quoted mythological origin of Guduchi as follows - 'During Rama - Ravana war several monkeys were killed.
