Thuththi (Sida rhombifolia) is a perennial undershrub, 50–150 cm tall, with woody stems and yellow flowers. The plant is commonly found in wastelands, roadsides, and open fields. In Ayurveda, it belongs to the Bala group and is considered a Rasayana (rejuvenative), Balya (strengthening), and Vrishya (aphrodisiac) drug. It is widely used for improving strength, treating respiratory disorders, bleeding conditions, and urinary diseases. In Ayurveda, Kakṣī is identified with Cassia absus (syn. Chaksu or Jasmeejaz), a medicinal plant primarily valued for its benefits in eye and respiratory disorders. The seeds are traditionally used in the treatment of conjunctivitis, eye redness, and other inflammatory eye conditions, hence it is also called Chaksu (meaning “beneficial for the eyes”). Apart from ocular use, Kakṣī is known for its expectorant and antimicrobial actions, making it useful in cough, asthma, and throat infections. With its bitter and astringent taste, it helps pacify Kapha and Pitta doshas, supporting both vision and respiratory health.
