Kanaka Umaththai is a perennial shrubby plant of the Datura genus. It grows up to 1–2 m tall, with broad ovate leaves having a strong odor. Flowers are large, trumpet-shaped, bright yellow in color (hence the name “Kanaka” = gold/yellow). The fruit is a spiny capsule containing numerous black seeds. The whole plant is toxic in high doses but has important medicinal value in Ayurveda and Siddha, particularly in respiratory and neurological disorders.
